Dear sir / madam,

I am writing to you in regards to the sale of fur inside of your shopping centre. As you may be aware, several shops inside of the Gunwharf Quays establishment have at one point sold fur products.

What you may not be aware of is the cruelty behind the fur industry.

Fur farmers pack animals into small cages, preventing them from taking more than a few steps back and forth. The anguish and frustration of life in a cage leads animals to self-mutilate and frantically pace and circle endlessly. Zoologists at Oxford University who studied captive minks found that despite generations of being bred for fur, mink have not been domesticated and suffer greatly in captivity, especially if they are not given the opportunity to swim.Foxes, raccoons, and other animals suffer just as much and have been found to cannibalize their cagemates in response to their crowded confinement. Some countries cruelly trap wild animals and kill them for their furs. Animals in the wild are often caught in cruel steel leghold traps that snap shut on the animal’s leg or foot causing excruciating pain. Often, they end up starving to death, or they will even chew off the trapped limb in order to get away.

Fur farmers care only about preserving the quality of the fur, so they use slaughter methods that keep the pelts intact but that can result in extreme suffering for the animals. Several exposes have shown animals being skinned alive for fur. Other methods range from anal electrocution to gassing, all of which are completely inhumane and cause great suffering. Small animals may be crammed into boxes and poisoned with hot, unfiltered engine exhaust from a truck. Engine exhaust is not always lethal, and some animals wake up while they are being skinned. Larger animals have clamps attached to or rods forced into their mouths and rods are forced into their anuses, and they are painfully electrocuted.

I urge you to consider making a fur free policy covering your shopping centre. Please contact the Southern Animal Rights Coalition (SARC) via www.sarconline.co.uk for more information, or to confirm a fur free stance.

Thank you for your time.

Yours sincerelly
